PERSECUTION OF APIB IS ATTACK ON BRAZILIAN DEMOCRACY
By WWF-BrasilWWF-Brasil comes to the public to express its indignation at the intimidation suffered by the indigenous activist Sônia Guajajara, one of the executive coordinators of the Apib (Articulation of the Indigenous Peoples of Brazil), the target of an inquiry opened by the Federal Police.
Under the absurd claim that, through the Maracá web-series, it would be distorting the numbers of indigenous people affected by COVID-19 and, thereby affecting the country's image, the investigation, which is being conducted under secrecy, is clearly abusive and shows the authoritarian face of the Bolsonaro government, which does not support independent voices pointing to the problems it tries to hide.
This intimidation is worrying because it attacks free speech. This is not the first time, however, that this has occurred: researchers, journalists and environmental activists, such as the Coordinator of the Climate Observatory, Márcio Astrini, have already been summoned to testify due to public positions they have taken.
Persecution is a clear attack on Brazilian democracy. The government should be concerned with controlling the pandemic that has already claimed the lives of more than 400,000 Brazilians and not with preventing independent data from being made public. Strange that the investigation was opened many months after the series was released, at a time when the government finds itself dealing with a CPI (Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry) to investigate its actions and omissions in facing the pandemic and the collapse of health occurred in the state of Amazonas at the beginning of the year.
Democracy is not negotiable. Without it, prosperity is not possible. WWF-Brazil is in solidarity with Sônia Guajajara, an essential leader, as well as with Apib and the entire Brazilian indigenous movement, equally attacked with this abusive act.
