Hollywood
is
a district of Los Angeles in California of great importance in the
cultural identity of the United States, and is situated northwest of
Downtown Los Angeles [2]. The
district became famous worldwide for the concentration of companies in
the film industry and its influence on global culture. Movie producers have excelled in Hollywood in search of natural light, cheaper and available.Over
the decades, Hollywood has become a symbol of the powerful and great
American film, hosting awards and honors public housing for the most
outstanding artists of film and music world. The
place is also famous for the big sign called Hollywood Sign and the
enormous concentration of the rich and famous who live in the district
or districts nearby.Due
to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie
studios and stars, the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonymy of
American cinema, and is often used interchangeably to refer to the
Greater Los Angeles in general. Nicknames StarStruck Town and Tinseltown refers to Hollywood and the film industry [3]. Currently,
much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as
the Westside region [4], however, significant auxiliary industries,
companies such as editing, effects, props, post-production and lighting
remain in Hollywood, as the backlot of Paramount Pictures. Many historic Hollywood theaters are used as venues and concert stages of major film debuts in addition to host the Oscars. It is a popular destination for nightlife and tourism and home to the Walk of Fame.Although
not a common practice in the city of Los Angeles to establish specific
boundaries for districts or neighborhoods, Hollywood is a recent
exception. On
February 16, 2005, members of the Assembly of the State of California
Jackie Goldberg and Paul Koretz presented a bill to require California
to keep specific records on Hollywood as though it were independent. To this could be done, the boundaries were defined. This
project was supported unanimously by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce
and the Los Angeles City Council, was approved by then-California
Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on August 28, 2006, allowing the district
of Hollywood possessed official boundaries. The
border can be loosely described as the area east of Beverly Hills and
West Hollywood, south of Mulholland Drive, Laurel Canyon, Cahuenga
Boulevard, and Barham Boulevard, and the cities of Burbank and Glendale,
north of Melrose Avenue and west of Golden State Freeway and Hyperion Avenue.Being
a part of the city of Los Angeles, Hollywood does not have its own
municipal government, but has a public official, appointed by the
Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, who serves as honorary "Mayor of
Hollywood" for ceremonial purposes only. Johnny Grant held this position for decades, until his death on January 9, 2008 [5]
