Police indict eight people for fire deaths in Flamengo's CT

The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police indicted eight people for the fire that  left 10 athletes dead and three injured  in the containers used as accommodation for the base categories at the Flamengo Training Center, better known as the Urubu's Nest, in February of this year. Among those indicted are former Flamengo president Eduardo Bandeira de Mello, engineers at the club and the company responsible for the containers, an air conditioning technician and a monitor.
The eight were charged with murder and attempted murder with eventual deceit, that is, assuming the risk of causing death. The fire killed 10 teenage athletes living in the club's accommodation, as well as leaving three injured who had to be hospitalized with burns.

In indicting the suspects, the police consider that the dormitory structure was incompatible with the destination, including structural and electrical irregularities, although the suspects were aware that several base athletes resided on the premises. The indictment also cites a lack of repairs on the air conditioners installed in the container and the noncompliance with the injunction issued by the city of Rio de Janeiro, in addition to the multiple fines imposed by the municipality for this noncompliance.
According to police, the former club president and monitor, who would not be present in the container, could and should have acted to prevent the fire. The engineers and the refrigeration technician "took the risk of producing the foreseeable result".

OTHER SIDE

Flamengo said it has not yet been notified and will expect to have access to the official information to speak. Meanwhile, the container manufacturer, NHJ do Brasil, said that although it had not had access to the police report, it believed that the expert work was incomplete. NHJ states that it filed a petition with the Civil Police on the last day 3 with "complementary questions addressed to the experts of the Institute of Criminalistics Carlos Éboli".
"Therefore, the termination of investigative work at this time, especially with the attribution of personal responsibility as an eventual fraud, does not reflect the complete elucidation of the facts," says the note of the company. "Precisely because of this, and because of trust in the innocence of its staff, NHJ will persist in seeking to contribute to Justice, certain that the Public Prosecutor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, which is not bound to the conclusions of the Civil Police, will be cautious necessary to analyze the records and determine the completeness of the investigations in order to avoid unfair criminal liability.
