Light bill: Tariff flags increase up to 50% from June

The increase is due to the change in methodology made by Aneel in relation to the assessment of the risk of water shortage in hydroelectric dams

São Paulo - The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) approved yesterday (21) the  increase of the values  of the light bill tariff flags. The system is used in periods of low rainfall, when hydroelectric plants do not meet the demand and it is necessary to use the energy generated by thermoelectric plants, of higher cost. As of June 1, the red flag level 2, the highest level of energy use of thermoelectric plants, will increase from R $ 5 per 100 kilowatt-hours (KWh) consumed to R $ 6. Along with the increase in cooking gas , fuel and food, this increase should  raise inflation .

Aneel justified the increase in light bill tariffs by a change in the methodology for assessing the risk of water shortage in hydroelectric dams, which intends to pass on to consumers a value that is closer to the real cost for the production and transmission of energy. The yellow flag increased from R $ 1.00 per 100 KWh to R $ 1.50, an increase of 50%. Already the red plate 1 went from R $ 3,00 to R $ 4,00 (about 33%) every 100 KWh consumed. The green flag does not cause increase in energy cost. The basic tariff, which is different for each distributor, will not increase at this time.

A possible reduction of light bill rates is discarded this year. There was speculation that, because of the tariffs applied in recent years, the tariff had a reduction of up to 4%. Now the agency assesses the possibility of a reduction of up to 5% in the basic tariff of the light bill in 2020, but there is no definition.

In addition to the increase in the electricity bill, from the beginning of the Jair Bolsonaro (PSL) government until the end of April, the price of gasoline in refineries increased by 31%, surpassing R $ 5 in some stations. The  cooking gas  had two increases this year, up almost 5% across the country. At the same time, the Central Bank raised the inflation expectation for 2019 from 4.04% to 4.07%, a figure that may increase by the end of the year.
