JOICE HASSELMANN WAS THE STARTING POINT OF SOME OF THE GREATEST ELECTION LIES

"I WANT TO BE THE BOLSONARO  of skirts". This is how Joice Hasselmann projects his mandate in the House. Elected with more than 1 million votes by the party of Jair Bolsonaro, the PSL, the former journalist from Paraná gained national fame after becoming an exponent of Brazilian reactionary in social networks. Its reach on the internet is enormous. Only on  Facebook does  it have almost 2 million followers. On  YouTube , where you post videos daily, you already have more than 1 million.

The thunderous success online is directly proportional to the dissemination of rumors and news in the least misunderstood in their social networks. The former journalist was primarily responsible for spreading one of the biggest lies of the first round, the fraud at the polls,  according to a report  by researchers and data analysts at Avaaz, a worldwide online mobilization community. Evaluating about 10,000 posts on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, the researchers found that former journalist was one of the starting points of the story that aimed to discredit the electoral process in Brazil - but only the results that displeased those involved, of course.

The false story gained momentum, according to tracking, after Hasselmann made a live broadcast on his Facebook and YouTube pages. In the video, Hasselmann "jointed" a supposed fraud in the polls (that is, distributed false, exaggerated or plagiarized content, verb already incorporated to the lexicon of the internet). She says she learned from one source that an alleged hacker, who had operated in three previous elections, was ready to take action again. Caught by other Bolsonarist opinion makers, including the sons of Bolsonaro and Jair himself, the lie reached about 16.5 million people in social networks within 48 hours after the elections. At 11am on October 7th, the hashtag #FraudeNasUrnas reached the top of Twitter trending topics.

On the day of the election, the former journalist also contributed to the dissemination of the video in which a voter enters the number 1 and soon appears the photo of Fernando Haddad, PT. The post has reached 3.9 million views on your Facebook. The Supreme Electoral Court has proven the falsity of the video, but Hasselmann kept the content several days in the air, before excluding it. So far, incidentally, it has not posted a correction on the lie it helped spread. Curiously, the questioning about the ballot box, according to her, does not apply to votes for governors and legislature - the one that elected it. Only for the Presidency.

In the second round, the role of opinion maker from contents of dubious origin was maintained. This time, she chose to highlight a supposed interference of Ira ?, Venezuela and Hezbollah in the Brazilian elections. The only evidence for the theory is a document written by US Rep. Dana Rohrabacher for US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Hasselmann mentions that the deputy is concerned about the integrity of the electoral process and the safety of the candidates, especially after the Bolsonaro attack.

On October 20, the day Joice Hasselmann published his video on the subject, the discussion reached its peak. On Facebook alone, the publication had more than 2.5 million views and was shared by at least 2,388 pages and groups. On YouTube, the video had more than 1.8 million views. The following day after publishing it, the MP reached 1 million subscribers in its channel.

Plagiarism, processes and a journalism lesson

Born in Ponta Grossa, Paraná, Hasselmann began his career in regional radio and TV programs. Before becoming a networking phenomenon, she was the anchor of programs on Jovem Pan and TVeja radio stations, places where she felt at ease to vent her obsession to criminalize the ideas identified with the left.

As a professional, Hasselmann excelled more in oratory than in journalism. Articulate and expressive, his career has always favored form - not content and determination. While still working in Paraná, she was reported on the Ethics Council of the Union of Journalists by 23 colleagues  for plagiarizing at least 65 reports  in less than a month. The serial plagiarist copied texts from colleagues and published on her blog as if they were her own - without credit, of course. Stealing the intellectual work of fellow professionals is gross corruption, but she omits this detail of her curriculum when she cries out for morality and for fighting frauds in the political world.

Despite the  irrefutable evidence , Joice Hasselmann still denies what happened. Their defense is basically to accuse the victims of their plagiarism of being " tramps linked to the PT and CUT,  " "envious" and "frustrated . " He promised that he would sue one by one of his accusers - but, of course, he did not keep the promise, since it would be necessary to prove in court that plagiarism did not exist. The case, however, ended her career in the press: five months later, she was dismissed and sued by Editora Abril. After the case went public, Reinaldo Azevedo, his then-counterpart at TVeja,  refused to continue presenting the program at his side. That would be an irreparable stain on any journalist's resume - but in post-truth times, it matters little. In fact, it seems that it was precisely this characteristic that made her take longer flights in her career.

The most voted woman in the history of the House despises the feminist movement which,  according to her , is composed of "boring people who pull a blouse to put a chest on the street". In  a play on a humor channel sketch on YouTube, Hasselmann appears wearing boxing gloves to defend Jair Bolsonaro from Maria do Rosário, in an allusion to the famous discussion in the Chamber's Green Room. "Do you deserve to be raped? Speak, mocreia! ", Asks Hasselmann, while he throws punches at the actor who acts as Maria do Rosário. "Do you know why he said that ('you do not deserve to be raped')? Because you're boring and ugly. "

Always quite focused on her ego, Joice Hasselmann loves to create nicknames for herself. First, hitchhiking in the public success of the operation of the Federal Police, he called himself "Lava Jato's Godmother." She even wrote a biography of Sérgio Moro that, from a journalistic point of view, is such a white story that seems to have been written by the judge's mother.

After being dismissed from Veja, Hasselmann continued to use the company brand without authorization - even registered the domain vejajoice.com.br. He still kept the name of the publication in his social networks and used in his profile images a horizontal red band, a mark of identity of TVeja. April's lawyers have  been given urgent injunctions  to bar Hasselmann from using the  word "see . " The journalist refused to comply with the court decision, which led her to be ordered to pay fine and  compensation for moral damages .

Another judicial clash in which Hasselmann got in because of a lie was with Luiza Nassif, daughter of journalist Luis Nassif. She  published a photo  of Luiza under the following headline: "Luis Nassif's daughter is commanding Moro in NY. Nassif received 5.7 million from the PT government. " But it was just another rumor for the journalist's collection - which was ordered to pay Nassif. In the sentence, the judge accused him of "divulging untrue journalistic material" and was still forced to teach the basic precepts of journalism to a person who identified himself as a journalist. According to the judge, the office has "a duty to be straight and truthful, to check its sources, to determine the origin of the facts, to weigh evidences, avoiding at all costs the hasty disclosure of criminal facts that could harm the life and reputation of people. "Apparently she has not yet learned.

Another rumor that Hasselmann  helped feed  was the "Decalogue of Lenin", which would be composed of 10 commandments of the Russian revolutionary and that would be used by the PT as a kind of manual to perpetuate in power. But Lenin, whom the journalist calls the "Russian dictator," has  never written anything like that . It was only Joice being Joice one more time.

The services provided by Hasselmann to the country charmed Jair Bolsonaro, whom she affectionately calls "zero one", a reference to the film Tropa de Elite. The elected MP says she had a misconception about him,  but everything changed. when she knew him from close up and was able to measure him with his moral rule. "It was enough for me to see that behind the man with strong positions there was a good, honest heart and an upright spine that does not bend." The captain invited her to be a candidate, but she hesitated for a moment. "I had some conversations with Bolsonaro, and there was a day when he, with eyes full of tears, after being carried by a crowd, told me: 'If I have a strong Congress, I change this country.' There was no way. I had no right to run away from that responsibility. "

Hasselmann sees himself as a heroine in the struggle of good versus evil. For her, the world is much simpler than imagined. There is no complexity, nuances, contradictions. His world is binary and Manichaean, as in children's tales. "I'll compose the bench of the good. And the other is that of evil,  which will try to disrupt Brazil . " It seems that the only reason that made her enter politics is the same one that moves her as a journalist: "the uninterrupted defense of the extinction of the PT", an  obsession shared by Bolsonaro  and practically the entire bench of his party.

But Hasselmann's ego has already caused problems for the PSL during the campaign. It is not considered reliable by its co-religionists. Without consulting anyone in the party, who had defined her candidacy as a federal deputy, the journalist  publicly announced that she would be a candidate for the Sao Paulo government, causing great embarrassment. Major Olimpio, president of PSL in São Paulo,  said she "crossed the samba to want to appear". Already Alexander Frota, also elected federal deputy, went to Twitter to call her  "biscate"  and  "ratazana that acts behind the scenes . "

Despite causing uproar within the PSL, Hasselmann is the candidate who received more money from the party:  $ 100,000 , while the other applications from the São Paulo directory received only $ 5,000. Hasselmann's thunderous voting, along with Eduardo Bolsonaro's, will  guarantee at least $ 110 million in public resources for the PSL from next year. Will the former journalist, who has  always been scandalized  by the millions earmarked for the Partisan Fund, remain scandalized?

In addition to his political career and right-wing electoral leadership, Hasselmann has now also  taught online courses . One of them is called "Global Communication with Character and Truth" and there are interesting topics like "Learn to see the lie", "The sound of truth - the truth has a different sound" and "Aula with training to identify the lie in the day to day". At least curious.

With this curriculum it is not difficult to understand why Joice Hasselmann became the main disseminator of the Bolsonaro campaign. The former journalist was scaled to give a credible varnish to the main rumors that contributed to leverage the captain's candidacy in a massive distribution scheme of lies that  impressed even the Electoral Commission  of the Organization of American States.
