Brazil - Health admits ineffectiveness of chloroquine and other drugs in the "covid kit"

 

The Ministry of Health admitted in documents sent to  Covid's CPI  this week that drugs that make up the so-called " covid kit ", widely advocated by  Jair Bolsonaro , are ineffective against the virus. 

"Some drugs have been tested and have not shown clinical benefits in the population of hospitalized patients, and should not be used, namely: hydroxychloroquine or chloroquine, azithromycin, lopinavir/ritonavir, colchicine and convalescent plasma. Ivermectin and the association of casirivimab + imdevimab do not have evidence that justifies its use in hospitalized patients, and should not be used in this population", says the document.

In May, the Ministry  had already issued an opinion  contraindicating the use of drugs for patients hospitalized with covid, but the opinion only reached the CPI this week. Two technical notes were delivered to the commission at the request of senator  Humberto Costa  (PT-PE).

The drugs are the same ones used for early treatment, which are defended by government supporters and indicated by the Ministry of Health application,  TrateCov , in Manaus (AM) in January, at the height of the oxygen crisis in the state. The platform went down after the folder alleges hacker invasion.

The CPI is investigating whether the existence of a cabinet parallel to the Ministry of Health influenced the delay in the purchase of vaccines, favoring laboratories and the purchase of drugs from the "covid kit" that were not effective for the treatment of the disease.

A first list of witnesses who are investigated by the commission for having composed this office and insisting on the use of medicines are: former Health Minister  Eduardo Pazuello , former government communications chief  Fábio Wajngarten , doctors  Mayra Pinheiro  and  Nise Yamaguchi  and former Chancellor  Ernesto Araújo .

Also on the list of investigated are: former advisor to the Ministry of Health  Elcio Franco , advisor to President  Arthur Weintraub , businessman  Carlos Wizard , Franciele Fantinato, Helio Neto, Marcellus Campelo, Paulo Marinho Zanotto, Luciano Dias Azevedo and the current boss from the folder,  Marcelo Queiroga .
