Brazil -Inpe will no longer release data on fires, says Bolsonaro
Physicist Ricardo Galvão, former director of the institute, dismissed by the president in 2019, stated that the change means a way to control the information disclosed
In yet another blow to the environment , the government of Jair Bolsonaro withdrew from the National Institute for Space Research ( Inpe ) the attribution of monitoring and reporting data on fires and burning in Brazilian forests. The agency had been responsible for disseminating this type of information on a daily basis for decades.
Physicist Ricardo Galvão , former director of Inpe, dismissed by Jair Bolsonaro in 2019, after defending the veracity of the data released by the agency, highlighted to Estadão that the change means a way to control the information disclosed.
“Inpe did not have this issue of conflict of interest. It is an organ of science and technology. Your data has always been important and respected. This change is clearly to control information. It's the only reason to do this”, he pointed out.
In a ceremony held by the Ministry of Agriculture to announce the change, Miguel Ivan Lacerda de Oliveira, director of the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), declared that the function will remain with the body to which he belongs.
Integration
Starting this Tuesday (13th), Inmet, subordinated to the Ministry of Agriculture, will monitor and publicize the places with a higher probability of fire occurrence, through the Fire Risk Monitoring Panel.
According to Oliveira, the change was made to avoid difficulties in integrating information, as the meteorological data came from Inmet. “It is a problem that Brazil faced for decades, in fact, for more than 40 years, the pulverization in the dissemination of data on fire and meteorology”, he argued.
