Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro faces his second formal charge, this time for money laundering

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro faces his second formal indictment, this time for money laundering and criminal association involving undeclared diamonds from Saudi Arabia. The indictment follows a previous charge in March for allegedly falsifying his COVID-19 vaccination certificate. While the Supreme Court analyzes the latest police report, Attorney General Paulo Gonet will decide on the next steps.

In August 2023, police revealed that Jair Bolsonaro received nearly $70,000 from the sale of two luxury watches gifted by Saudi Arabia. Brazilian law requires citizens to declare assets worth more than $1,000 when arriving from abroad and pay a 50% tax on any excess value. Legal expert Renato Stanziola Vieira told The Associated Press that the indictment adds to Bolsonaro’s legal troubles, which his supporters have called political persecution. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing or criminal association involving undeclared diamonds from Saudi Arabia. Justice delayed is justice denied

Martin Luther King Jr.

"Justice delayed is justice denied"

is a   legal maxim  . It means that if   legal redress   or   equitable relief   to an injured party is available but is not provided in a timely manner, it is effectively the same as having no remedy at all.  [1]

This principle is the basis of the right to a   speedy trial   and similar rights that aim to streamline the legal system, because of the injustice to the injured party who has suffered the injury, who has little hope of timely and effective redress and resolution. The phrase has become a rallying cry for   legal reformers     who see   courts  ,   judges  ,   arbitrators  , and   administrative law judges  as  ...

[A]  committees    or   governments   for moving too slowly in resolving legal issues—either because the case is too complex, the existing system is too complex or overburdened, or because the issue or party in question lacks political support. Individual cases can be affected by judicial hesitancy to make a decision. Statutes and judicial rules attempt to control this tendency; and judges may be subject to supervision and even discipline for persistent failure to decide issues in a timely manner or to report their case backlog accurately. When a court takes an issue “under consideration”—awaiting the issuance of an opinion  ,   order   , or   judgment  ,   and prevents   the  final adjudication of a   lawsuit   or the resolution of a   motion   —the question of the timeliness of the decision(s) comes into play.
