IMAGE OF THE DAY - BRAZILIAN STUDENTS, CA.1940S
As students are midweek from final exams and teachers in the middle of the standings, it seems like an opportune moment to revive the image of the day series.
Below is an image of students in a classroom, during the Estado Novo (1937-1945) of Getúlio Vargas, who ruled Brazil from 1930-1945 and 1950-1954.
During Vargas's regime, Brazil witnessed a rapid transformation of society and politics, as Vargas was the first to make a truly centralized national government after the federalist of the First Republic (1889-1930) and the Empire of Brazil (1822-1889 ).
During Vargas' first administration / dictatorship, Brazilian society saw great changes in the structure of the state, politics, economy, work and other areas. Education witnessed transformations, as the government sought to reform education, opening it up to more Brazilians and using it to expand a sense of national identity among Brazilians across the country.
The "successes" were mixed at best, as Brazil's primary school system encountered real social and economic barriers and reinforced racial hierarchies that favored values and identities associated with "white" Brazilians over those of a complexion More dark. However, the Vargas era initiated a process of broad educational reforms that would continue (with various political ideologies to motivate them) throughout the 20th century.

LETTER OF TESTAMENT OF GETÚLIO VARGAS
Posted on August 30, 2016
I follow the destiny that is imposed upon me. After decades of domination and plundering of international economic and financial groups, I became the head of a revolution and won. I began the work of liberation and established the system of social freedom. I had to resign. I returned to the government in the arms of the people. The underground campaign of the international groups was allied to that of the national groups revolted against the regime of guarantee of the work. The extraordinary profits law was held in Congress. Against the Justice of the revision of the minimum wage the hatreds were triggered. I wanted to create the national freedom in the potentialization of our riches through Petrobras, as soon as it begins to work the wave of agitation increases. Eletrobrás was hampered to despair. They do not want the people to be independent. I assumed government within the inflationary spiral that destroyed the values of labor. The profits of foreign companies reached up to 500% per year. There were frauds of more than $ 100 million a year in the value declarations we imported. The coffee crisis came, our main product was valued.
We tried to defend its price and the response was a violent pressure on our economy to the point of being forced to give in. I have struggled month by month, day by day, hour by hour, resisting constant, incessant pressure, all struggling in silence, all forgetting and renouncing myself, to defend the people who now are left destitute. I can give you nothing but my blood. If birds of prey want someone's blood, they want to continue sucking the Brazilian people, I offer my life as a holocaust. I choose this way to be always with you. When they humble you, you will feel my soul suffering at your side.
When hunger knocks on your door, you will feel in your heart the energy for the struggle for you and your children. When you are vilified, you will feel in my mind the force for reaction. My sacrifice will hold you together and my name will be your banner of struggle. Every drop of my blood will be an immortal flame in your consciousness and will keep the vibration sacred for resistance. To hate I respond with forgiveness. And to those who think that they defeat me I respond with my victory.
I was a slave of the people and today I am set free for eternal life. But this people, of whom I was a slave, will no longer be a slave to anyone. My sacrifice will be forever in your soul and my blood will have the price of your ransom. I fought against the plunder of Brazil. I fought against the plunder of the people. I have been fighting with my chest open. Hatred, infamy, slander did not overwhelm me. I gave you my life. Now I offer my death. I'm not afraid. I calmly take the first step on the path of eternity and I leave life to enter history.
The Testament Letter of Getúlio Vargas is a document addressed to the Brazilian people written by Getúlio Vargas hours before his suicide, dated August 24, 1954
