Blackout affects North and Northeast, with reflexes in all regions of the country

ELETROBRAS TEM

PREJUDICE OF R $ 14

BILLION

SWING. The result represents an increase of 376% in relation to the loss verified in 2014

Rio de Janeiro, RJ - Eletrobras has recognized losses of R $ 4.973 billion in the Angra 3 nuclear power plant project, which has been suspended since September 2015 and is being investigated by Lava Jato.

The decrease in the value of this asset was one of the main causes of the loss of R $ 14.442 billion recorded by the company in 2015, according to the balance sheet filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM) released on Wednesday.

The result represents an increase of 376% in relation to the

2014, of R $ 3 billion.In the fourth quarter, when the write-downs were made, the loss was R $ 10.4 billion.

According to the state-owned company, losses with the Angra 3 plant reflect a further postponement of the start-up of the project, this time to December 2020, and the revision of the discount rates used to calculate the value of the asset, resulting from the increase in risk Brazil.

USINA Work

on the plant resumed in 2009, but began to be stopped as from September 2015, after one of the consortia decided to break the contract alleging non-payment by Eletronuclear, a subsidiary of Eletrobras responsible for the operation of the Brazilian nuclear park .

Eletronuclear has struggled to capture the resources needed to complete the work.

The former president of the company, Othon Luiz Pinheiro da Silva, has been imprisoned since July, accused of participating in a corruption scheme.

In total, Eletrobras has written off R $ 5.991 billion in the value of its assets.

The company reported that the negative result was also influenced by provisions for losses in lawsuits of R $ 5.283 billion, involving compulsory loans, a kind of fee charged in the bill of light of large consumers until the 1990s to encourage investments in the expansion of the park energy.

There were 3,868 lawsuits for the payment of these loans and, in the third quarter of 2015, the Superior Court of Justice defined methodology for calculating executions, which led the company to increase the provisioned amount.

The federalized energy distributors (companies that were not sold in the privatization and passed to the control of Eletrobras) contributed with the poor performance, when registering losses of R $ 5,195 billion.

GENERAL FALL

Profit of publicly traded companies in the country fell 87% in 2015, according to a balance sheet released by Economática. In all, the 297 Brazilian companies made a profit of R $ 14 billion last year, against R $ 110 billion in 2014. ‡

Blackout affects North and Northeast, with reflexes in all regions of the country

ACCORDING TO THE ONS, 'DISTURBANCE IN THE NATIONAL INTERCONNECTED SYSTEM' CAUSED THE SHUTDOWN OF ABOUT 18 THOUSAND MEGAWATTS.

All regions of the country had problems on Wednesday (21) with the power supply. The situation was worse in the North and Northeast, where whole states were left without light.
The traffic has turned into chaos in  Recife  after 206 signs stopped working, including in the busiest avenues.

In the stores, the salesmen had to stop working because of the lack of energy; 37 subway stations in the metropolitan area of Recife were closed. The passengers had to get out of the wagons and walk on foot.

It was a blackout. According to the National Electric System Operator (ONS), at 3:48 pm there was what the technicians classified as 'disturbance in the national interconnected system'. This caused the shutdown of about 18,000 megawatts, which brought down the power supply mainly in the North and Northeast.

The blackout hit cities in all nine Northeastern states, as well as cities in five northern states.
There was still a lack of light in some cities of  Rio de Janeiro ,  Minas Gerais ,  São Paulo ,  Santa Catarina ,  Goiás ,  Mato Grosso  and in  the Federal District . In Paraná there was variation of energy.

There were only problems in  Acre ,  Roraima ,  Mato Grosso do Sul ,  Espírito Santo  and  Rio Grande do Sul .
In Macapá, intersections with erased signs. The Fortaleza companies   released employees earlier because of the lack of light. Energy was lacking in the entire state of  Ceará .
At the Federal University of  Alagoas , in  Maceió , students tested in the dark.

In Salvador, lots of bottling and closed gas stations.
"It lacked energy; the post is all automated, can not supply. "
Complicated traffic also in  Aracaju . From the top of the city you could see only the lights of the cars.
On the night of Wednesday (21), the Minister of Mines and Energy, Fernando Coelho Filho, spoke about blackouts.
"At the takeover of the first Belo Monte bipolar, where it was operating with 2,000 megawatts going up to 4,000 megawatts, the line went out, and when it exited the system, it took 22% of the system load at that moment, which generated everything the blackout. What caused or what led this line to leave the system ONS hopes, very soon, to be able to explain to the population, "said the minister.
The North Energy Consortium, responsible for Belo Monte, stated that the blackout was not originated by the plant. ONS director general Luiz Eduardo Barata Ferreira said that a failure at the Xingu substation in Pará caused the power outage. He also said that 40% of the Northeast Region are still without light.
