Aneel ratifies the contracting of thermal energy that will cost R$ 39 billion from 2022 to 2025
BRASÍLIA — The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) ratified this Saturday the result of the emergency energy contracting auction for the coming years at a total cost of R$ 39 billion. The contracts are valid from 2022 to 2025.

The auction served to contract reserve energy with the aim of optimizing resources to face the current water crisis. The contract is expected to increase electricity supply by 775.8 average megawatts.
The energy will come mainly from 14 natural gas thermal power plants in Espírito Santo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. The rest will come from two solar power plants in Rondônia and one for biomass in Mato Grosso.
To ratify this contracting, Aneel had to overturn an injunction in court that questioned the impact of the contracting cost on the energy tariff. The plaintiffs of the action, Érica Conceição Passos and Gerenilza Passos, questioned the agency's decision for alleged irregularities and unnecessary expenditure, as the rains are refilling the reservoirs.
The plaintiffs won in the first instance, but this Saturday, judge Italo Fiovaranti Sabo Mendes, president of the Federal Regional Court of the 1st Region (TRF-1), understood that this was not the case.
The start of the supply of these plants is scheduled for May 2022 and there is a forecast of investments of R$ 5.2 billion.
