Toyota to close São Bernardo do Campo plant
TOYOTA PLANT IN THE ABC REGION OF SÃO PAULO WILL END ITS OPERATION AT THE END OF NEXT YEAR, WITH A TRANSFER TO THE OTHER CITIES IN WHICH THE COMPANY OPERATES
Toyota do Brasil informed that it will transfer the operation of the São Bernardo do Campo factory to the other cities in which it already operates. They are Sorocaba, Indaiatuba and Porto Feliz, all in the interior of the State of São Paulo. As a result, the ABC plant will be completely deactivated, including the administrative area offices.
The company explains that this change will be carried out gradually, starting in December this year and expected to be completed in November 2023. The manufacturer says it wants to keep its current employees, offering everyone the opportunity to transfer. “The movement provides for the maintenance of 100% of the jobs of employees who currently work in the ABC Paulista operation, including support for change, in addition to other benefits”, says Rafael Chang, president of Toyota do Brasil.
Currently, the São Bernardo do Campo plant has around 550 people. This is one of the oldest car factories in Brazil, in addition to being Toyota's first outside Japan. On site, components are produced that supply the engine factory in Porto Feliz (SP), equipping the Etios, Yaris and Corolla models, in addition to exporting parts to the US, for assembling the Camry sedan engine.
The change is part of the brand's new strategy in the country, including the renewal of its portfolio, the introduction of the third shift in Sorocaba, the export of engines from Porto Feliz to North America and the investment of R$ 50 million in the operation of Indaiatuba . In fact, the Corolla sedan leaves Indaiatuba, while the Corolla Cross, Yaris and Etios leave from Sorocaba. In Porto Feliz, the engines for these models are made.
