Duchess of Cambridge hoax call: nurse Jacintha Saldanha wrote 'suicide note' before killing herself
A nurse at the Duchess of Cambridge’s hospital who killed herself after being the victim of a hoax wrote note to her family before she died, it has emerged.
Jacintha Saldanha, 46, was found unconscious in a nurses’ accommodation block
near the King Edward VII Hospital on Friday and was later declared dead at
the scene.
A post-mortem examination on her body is being carried out by a Home Office
pathologist to determine the cause of her death, the results of which are
expected to be made public later today.
According to the Evening Standard, Mrs Saldanha left a note for her husband
Ben Barboza, 49, and children Junal, 17, and Lisha, 14, but the family still
believe there are "unexplained circumstances".
Keith Vaz, the Labour MP who has offered to help the family, said: "What
the family need are the full facts. There are unexplained circumstances. The
family want to know everything.
"The hospital needs to be more proactive, a full inquiry is needed and
the family need to be included in that."
Meanwhile the Australian radio station behind the prank call said it would
donate a minimum of £326,000 to a fund for her family.
The owners of 2Day FM said all profits from now until the end of the year would be donated to the fund, with a minimum of 500,000 Australian dollars guaranteed.
The station also cancelled its planned Christmas party out of “respect” for Mrs Saldanha’s family and will give the money it would have spent on the party to charities helping people with depression.
Last week Mrs Saldanha, a mother of two, put through a call from two DJs impersonating the Queen and the Prince of Wales, who then spoke to a nurse on the Duchess’s ward.
Rhys Hollaran, the chief executive of Southern Cross Media Group, said: “We are very sorry for what has happened. It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts continue to be with the family. We hope that by contributing to a memorial fund we can help to provide the Saldanha family with the support they need at this very difficult time.”
On Monday the King Edward VII Hospital set up the Jacintha Saldanha Memorial Fund to help her family.
Lord Glenarthur, the chairman of the hospital, said: “We would certainly welcome such a donation to the fund.” He added that “many donations have already been made from around the world”.
The two presenters who made the call, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, have been suspended and their show has been cancelled.
An inquest into Mrs Saldanha’s death will be opened on Thursday.
Meanwhile the Duchess of Cambridge is too unwell to attend the Royal Film Performance of The Hobbit tomorrow night, St James’s Palace announced.
After her severe pregnancy sickness got worse on Sunday, the Duchess will stay at home and “rest privately”, royal aides said.
The Duke of Cambridge is still planning to attend the screening, but the Duchess will not now be seen in public before Christmas.
