The unusual parade of armored vehicles through the streets of Brasília this Tuesday morning (10) used equipment displaced from Rio de Janeiro for the largest annual exercise of ground forces by the Brazilian Navy, Operation Formosa.

Although the use of the word tank has made headlines and speeches by politicians, only one of the vehicles present, which featured videos and memes on the internet due to the smoke given off and the apparent poor regulation of the diesel engine, can be classified as such.

It is the light tank, or light tank, SK-105 Kürassier. The marines have a small fleet of 17 units of this ancient Austrian vehicle, produced since the 1970s and incorporated in 2001. The Army operates German Leopard model tanks themselves, but they are not part of this exercise.

The simulation in Formosa has taken place every year since 1988.

The parade and the delivery of the invitation to appear by President Jair Bolsonaro, however, are unprecedented and universally read as an attempt to intimidate the Powers on the day the Chamber should bury the proposal to reintroduce the printed vote.

The exercise is the main training moment for the Marine Corps, which is headquartered in Rio. It takes place at the Instruction Center in Formosa (GO), 80 km from Brasília.

The area of ​​1,800 km² belongs to the Army, which cedes it to the Navy for allowing the use of real ammunition. This year, there will be 2,500 soldiers, with a residual presence of 100 men from the Land Force, which has already participated in other years, and an unprecedented 30 Air Force aviators.

In 2020, with the pandemic, only 500 were involved to avoid contamination — the previous year, there were 1,900. According to the newspaper Correio Brasiliense, there is an alleged outbreak of Covid-19 occurring in the camp in Formosa, but the Navy does not confirm it.

They passed the Praça dos Três Poderes and the Esplanade of Ministries, old known from Operations to Guarantee Law and Order in Rio, as the American amphibious assault vehicle AAV-7A1.

Brazil operates nearly 50 of these 26-tonne monsters when loaded, in action since the early 1970s in the US, half of the fleet being recent: the vehicles were purchased in 2014 after being used in actions such as the takeover of Complexo do Alemão .

Another mainstay of the Marines is the small M-113, a venerable, obsolete tracked troop transport vehicle. He was another of the stars of the smoke festival during the parade.

More modern, the veteran of the Mowag Piranha River GLOs, made in Switzerland and purchased in the 2000s to initially operate in the Brazilian-led peacekeeping mission in Haiti, was also deployed.

Most effective in Formosa are the Astros family's multiple rocket launchers, perhaps the main or only Brazilian deterrent weapon that would cause a hostile neighbor to worry.

In all, there are 150 vehicles, 1,500 tons of equipment, which the Navy brought 1,400 km to the cerrado. Formosa will take place from this Tuesday until the 16th.
